Pitch

When you edit a post on widescreen, the post editing happens in the tiny "new toot" box on the lefthand side, which makes larger posts almost impossible to edit (I'm on an instance with 5000 character limit). When you resize the window to half that width, the editor is moved into the central column, which despite the smaller window massively increases its width and therefore usability. I propose to make that the default behaviour, an optional default behaviour, or the default behaviour for posts longer than the contents of the compose box.

Pictures:

  • first: default widescreen behaviour
  • second: current small-screen-only behaviour
  • third: compose box tiny size when editing (that's 145 characters!)

Motivation

This would make edits of posts longer than ~100–200 characters immensely easier.

I'm wondering if editing toots should happen in a modal, which would also eliminate the space issue.
Not sure how feasible that is though.

tbh my preferred way would be to turn the toot itself into the editor, but for now, barring wider-reaching modifications, I'd be happy already to just get behaviour B on all screen sizes.

The problem I see is that it wouldn't solve this issue in the advanced UI.
