There's no reason to keep this private given that vacuum() is public.
Oh, and teach vacuum() to run statistics_update (i.e VACUUM ANALYZE).

Sigh, I tried to add another comment asking for tests to be added, but I did it from my email client and it got bounced because it was from the wrong email address.
