I'm running Thunderbird 31.4.0 and Unity 7.3.1 from official Ubuntu Utopic (14.10) repositories.
With extensions.firetray.with_appindicator property set to FALSE I see no firetray icon at all.
With extensions.firetray.with_appindicator property set to default TRUE, I see the icon but in the configuration window I note that "display unread messages count in tray icon" option has vanished.
Such option appears again if I set extensions.firetray.with_appindicator property to FALSE, but as I said, with this value I have no icon at all.
I tried also with the unity patch to re-enable systray whitelist here:
Hi, see #130, and this explanation. Basically the message count can't be displayed with libappindicator at this time. #143 is tracking the replacement of libappindicator, but I haven't time to work on it at the moment.
