Cross Stitch Carpentry

Welcome to this project repository! 🎉🎉

This lesson repository aims to make cross stitching an accessible hobby for programmers and data scientists to help them bring mindfulness into their everyday life and boost mental health.

This lesson has been, primarily written by Dr. Sarah Gibson, a research software engineer and an expert cross stitcher, who uses cross stitch as a way to gently exercise her analytical skills in a hobby environment.

The co-author, Malvika Sharan, a novice cross stitcher, who received her first kit as an adult from Sarah, was interested in gathering evidence on why cross stitch is useful and if we can promote such hobbies in our research community (see this motivation).

To encourage self care among The Turing Way contributors, they along with the The Turing Way lead, Kirstie Whitaker, gave away cross stitch starter packages to their book dash attendees as a thank you gift. The package also included a manual developed by Sarah, that is now written into this Carpentries style lesson to improve accessibility of this simple yet useful resource.

The Turing Way team will also use this lesson as an example to test The Carpentries lesson template where they intend to host lessons relevant for The Turing Way project in the future.
