PLEASE HELP! I ran a backup but can't restore it!

I have never used the backup function. I had Omni Notes installed from Droidify/Fdroid until now, but now installing via Play Store. I took a backup which saved in a new folder I called 'Omni', after installing again I tried to restore but it says no backups available, but I see a load of files in that folder.
Do backups not work? if they do, grateful for advice on how to restore as I need those reminders!

After playing around, and I can't get the backup to work, am I right in thinking that even though it has the same version niumber, Omni Notes is diffferent depending whether installed via Fdroid versus github/Playstore? Backups from one type won't restore in the other and vice versa. can you confirm?
