Replacing _mountIndex, etc with something less fragile

@jordwalke We talked briefly a while back about this, if I recall correctly, you've been working a bit on this right? Any information on progress or ETA?

After having done my "iframefix" PR I've gotten a lot more familiar with the backside of  `_mountIndex`, and I might perhaps take a stab at it otherwise.
