The problem is that Simple Machines gives every single post a title, which defaults to Re: {Topic Name}. SMF is a lot more featureful than, eg, vBulletin, which mostly confuses users. The point of our custom theme was to stop bewildering everybody with these useless features. I accomplished this in 2007 by removing the post title box, which just caused every post title to have the default name.

It's not clear whether there's a better approach. I probably won't fix this until we re-skin the forums for the v3 design that a2h gave us in 2011.
