**Title:** I added three AI chat modes to my Kubernetes CLI — here's what each one actually does differently

I've been working on KSail, a CLI that bundles kubectl, helm, flux, argocd, kind, k3d, talos, and vcluster into a single binary. One of the features is `ksail chat`, an AI assistant powered by GitHub Copilot that has context about your cluster config, distribution, and running workloads.

The chat feature started as a basic interactive loop. This week I finished aligning it with the upstream Copilot SDK's three-mode model, which has genuinely different behavior depending on what you're trying to do:

**Interactive** (default) — normal back-and-forth. The AI can run read-only operations (get pods, describe resources, check logs) automatically. Write operations (apply, delete, scale) pause and ask for your approval before executing. Good for: "why is this pod in CrashLoopBackOff" or "what's wrong with my Kustomization."

**Plan** — no tool execution at all. The AI describes what it would do step-by-step, but doesn't run anything. Good for: understanding what a proposed change entails before committing. Useful when you want to review the approach, not just the output.

**Autopilot** — full execution without interruption. The AI determines what needs to happen and runs it end-to-end. No approval prompts. Good for: routine tasks you've done enough times to trust the output. Obviously the one to use carefully.

You switch modes mid-session with `i`, `p`, or `a` keyboard shortcuts — you don't have to restart the chat.

The dependency is GitHub Copilot, so this isn't self-hosted AI. For anyone already using Copilot it's the same model and authorization — you `gh auth login` and it just works. The trade-off is obvious if you're not already a Copilot subscriber.

One thing I found useful: Plan mode before Autopilot mode. Describe what you want, switch to Plan to see the proposed steps, then switch to Autopilot if the plan looks right. It's essentially a manual approval gate you can apply selectively.
