Visits - and identification of locations - some suggestions?

So, I have deployed Reitti cleanly and imported 15 years of google timeline. Additionaly, I have no enabled gpslogger on my android and it is successfully sending my whereabouts - all seems to be working quite nicely. However, I'm trying to get to a point where it "somewhat" mimics google timeline in giving me an idea of what stops I have made on a certain day.

I've played with visit sensitivity, with a "little success", but looking for some pointers. What are the best senstitivity settings. Also, what suggestions to update reverse geolocation capabilities that would better call out items like stores and locations better. I'm up to enhancing and adding hardware and software if needed.

Example below. I visited a get together at a restaurant, thus all of those points of me walking around within the restaurant. Would be nice to not see that ... and it would be nice to have it recognize the restaurant. Is this something that I could get to? Hints, settings suggestions, etc would be quite welcome. I love how easy it was to bring this up, and am impressed with the attention to detail and documentation thus far (even though i still need help :) ) Thanks for any input

For the Geolocation Settings. I would suggest trying out GeoApify. It seems to me like they have the most metadata. The thing with GPS (how we receive the data) is that it is not perfect so you get all that jitter around your real location. Reitti tries to smooth that out by calculating a center point around the data. But this then moves the point around again, and this is the point we are searching the Place via reverse geocoding. So, it is likely that reitti didn't even ask for the "correct" location.

I can only imagine how Google does it but it probably involves a lot of knowledge about you as the user and alot of algorithm to find the most likely spot for you. Sometimes they just ask you if you been there.

I could imagine in the future to do something like expanding the search for the reverse geocoder and calculate the most likely place when we are creating new significant places. This would also need some form of configuration since in urban areas, this most likely will return alot of possible locations and i have no idea which would fit best for the user.

Based on your screenshot, I would try to lower the search radius. This could help moving the place more into the restaurant. You can use the preview to verify this.

I have no plans of hiding the path behind the visit. The thing is that I have no idea where to connect the path back to the circle.

Does it show meters,km in the preview only or also on the main view? Could be that I missed taking the unit system for the preview into account. Let me check that and probably fix it if that is the case.

You probably mean the Postgres log. They are normal. This happens because our queues are working in parallel on the data, and the trip queue needs the visits, but the visit queue could already have deleted that visit for recalculation. It will sort it out in the end, but i decided for that tradeoff to not have to work sequentially on the data which would take days instead of hours to import years of data.

If you want to start over with the data you could enable the DANGEROUS_LIFE env in the docker-compose.yml file. See https://github.com/dedicatedcode/reitti?tab=readme-ov-file#environment-variables - this will enable a new Settings-Section called "Manage Data" there are some functions to clear the existing data.

But I think, after reading your comment there may be a general problem with that. Let me explain: the buttons can remove everything except SignificantPlaces which stay in the DB to not cause that much strain on the geocoders. If we change the sensitivity settings, the pipeline will propably move the place of a point cluster around but then at the final stage it searches for existing SignificantPlaces near that new centerpoint and most likely will find the old one again. So nothing changes. I will create an issue for that. #349

It displays meters/km in the main view as well. So, I'll add the variable and enable clear data - but, not sure when you mentioned "general problem with that" whether that is worthwhile. I'd be comfortable clearing the DB entirely and re-importing the timeline if that makes sense. thanks again -

Ok, did you have set the unit system in the settings for your account set the imperial units? In the DB we always store them as meters and only convert them in the frontend to miles etc. I would not see any other chance why it should be displayed in meters again.

You could delete the entries from the table significant_places . Here is the full script for this:

DELETE FROM trips;
DELETE FROM processed_visits;
DELETE FROM visits;
DELETE FROM raw_location_points;
DELETE FROM geocoding_response;
DELETE FROM significant_places;

That should do it. I did not execute it, maybe i missed one or two FK constraints.

That way, you would not loose your settings and api keys.

so, to be clear - after deleting from the above tables ... I re-import my data from takeout? Not sure how far back this takes me. I've cleared those tables and ready to move on. thanks again.

Yes, you can reimport your google takeout data. This should bring you back up if you use the same files for importing.
