πŸ—οΈ v8.26.0: All-Topic Root Cause Fixes

Overview

Version 8.26.0 implements comprehensive root cause fixes that work for any research topic - from finance to health, climate to technology. The system uses generic intents, configurable authorities, and domain-agnostic triangulation to deliver consistent results across all domains.

Key Root Cause Fixes Applied

  • Generic Intent System: Universal intents (macro_trends, company_filings, gov_stats) work across all domains
  • Cached Embeddings Model: Single @lru_cache SentenceTransformer in triangulation/embeddings.py - no reloading
  • Adaptive Triangulation: Auto-adjusts similarity threshold based on data distribution (70th percentile, bounded 0.32-0.48)
  • Configurable Authorities: YAML-based primary source detection in config/authorities.yml - add any domain
  • Domain Fetch Policies: YAML-based HTTP headers/fallbacks in config/fetch_policies.yml - configure any site
  • Recovery Providers: High-signal providers (worldbank, oecd, imf, eurostat, wikipedia) for automatic recovery
  • Gate Debug Output: Writes gate_debug.json with metrics, thresholds, and pass/fail decisions

πŸ›‘οΈ v8.26.0: Production-Hardened Features

Generic Intent Classification

  • Domain-Agnostic Intents: Works for any topic without hardcoded domains
    • macro_trends: Trends, outlooks, forecasts across any field
    • company_filings: SEC-like documents (10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, annual reports)
    • gov_stats: Census, surveys, official statistics
    • medical, academic, news, howto: Specialized query types
  • Intent-Aware Thresholds: Each intent has appropriate quality gates
    • Macro Trends: 30% primary, 25% triangulation
    • Company Filings: 40% primary, 30% triangulation
    • Gov Stats: 35% primary, 25% triangulation
    • Medical: 65% primary, 50% triangulation

Enhanced Triangulation System

  • Cached Model Loading: Single SentenceTransformer instance via @lru_cache - no duplicate models
  • Adaptive Thresholds: Uses 70th percentile of similarity distribution (bounded 0.32-0.48)
  • Numeric Token Boost: Cards sharing 2+ years/percentages get similarity boost
  • Smart Contradiction Filter: Checks units, periods, and relative differences (35% tolerance)

Configurable Domain Policies

1. Authority Detection (config/authorities.yml)

  • 50+ Primary Domains: Government, international orgs, central banks, academic
  • Pattern Matching: Supports wildcards (*.oecd.org, *.gov)
  • Numeric Requirements: Configurable minimum tokens for primary classification
  • Easy Extension: Add your industry-specific authorities via YAML

2. Fetch Policies (config/fetch_policies.yml)

  • Per-Domain Headers: Custom User-Agent, Accept, Referer headers
  • Alternative URLs: Fallback hosts when primary fails (e.g., OECD alt host)
  • HEADβ†’GET Fallback: Automatic retry strategy for restrictive servers
  • Easy Extension: Add new domains without code changes

3. Provider Groups (providers/groups.py)

  • Reusable Groups: macro_econ, encyclopedic, academic, filings
  • Intent Composition: Combine groups for each intent type
  • Easy Extension: Add new provider groups for your domain

All-Topic Examples

The v8.26.0 system works seamlessly across all domains:

# Finance/Economics
./run_full_features.sh "GDP growth forecast 2025"
./run_full_features.sh "Apple 10-K filing analysis"

# Health/Medical
./run_full_features.sh "diabetes treatment clinical trials"
./run_full_features.sh "COVID-19 vaccine efficacy studies"

# Climate/Environment
./run_full_features.sh "renewable energy trends 2024"
./run_full_features.sh "carbon emissions reduction policies"

# Technology
./run_full_features.sh "AI chip market outlook"
./run_full_features.sh "quantum computing breakthroughs 2024"

# Travel/Tourism (still works!)
./run_full_features.sh "global tourism recovery trends"

4. Smarter Contradiction Filtering

  • 35% tolerance for numeric disagreements (was stricter)
  • Requires 3+ domains before considering contradictions meaningful
  • Preserves clusters from trusted domains (OECD, UN, etc.)
  • Only filters when >10% of pairs show contradiction

5. Intent-Aware Query Filtering

  • Blocks SEC queries for travel/tourism intents
  • Prevents irrelevant domain searches based on query type
  • Reduces wasted API calls and improves relevance

Resilient Output Generation Features

1. Always Emit Readable Reports (WRITE_REPORT_ON_FAIL=true)

  • Generates final_report.md with preliminary banner when gates fail
  • Report includes all sections but warns about lower confidence
  • Users always get structured insights, never empty-handed

2. Evidence Bundle Persistence (Always On)

  • Before quality gates run, saves to evidence/ directory:
    • final_cards.jsonl - All evidence cards
    • sources.csv - Flat source list for easy review
    • metrics_snapshot.json - Quality metrics
  • Ensures work is never lost, even on catastrophic failure

3. Degraded Draft Output (WRITE_DRAFT_ON_FAIL=true)

  • Creates draft_degraded.md with minimal but useful content
  • Shows metrics snapshot and top 30 evidence bullets
  • Clear warning about quality gates not being met

4. Dynamic Gate Profiles (GATES_PROFILE=discovery)

Two profiles available:

  • default: Standard strict thresholds (50% primary, 45% triangulation)
  • discovery: Relaxed for broad topics (30% primary, 30% triangulation)

5. Last-Mile Backfill (BACKFILL_ON_FAIL=true)

  • When gates fail, attempts one more collection pass
  • Uses free APIs (Wikipedia, DuckDuckGo) with relaxed constraints
  • Re-checks gates after backfill - can rescue borderline runs

6. Trusted Domain Protection (TRUSTED_DOMAINS)

Never filters these domains regardless of credibility:

  • Default: OECD, UNWTO, WTTC, World Bank, IMF, WHO, UN, etc.
  • Extend via: TRUSTED_DOMAINS=custom1.org,custom2.com

7. Enhanced Triangulation (TRI_PARA_THRESHOLD=0.35)

  • Lower default threshold (was 0.40) for broader clustering
  • Numeric token boost: Claims sharing 2+ numbers/years cluster together
  • Better handles paraphrases in broad topic research

8. Reranker Fallback (Automatic)

  • Lexical fallback when HuggingFace rate limits (429 errors)
  • Query-document token overlap scoring
  • Year/percent bonus scoring for relevance

  • Coverage tracking: Ensures minimum sources per topic

🎯 Intent-Aware Universal Research (v8.8.0)

Hybrid Intent Classification

The system uses a three-stage hybrid classifier for robust intent detection:

  1. Rule-Based (Stage A): High-precision regex patterns for obvious queries

    • Instant detection for clear patterns (e.g., "how to", "near me", "10-K filing")
    • Zero latency, deterministic results
  2. Semantic Similarity (Stage B): SentenceTransformer embeddings

    • Uses all-MiniLM-L6-v2 model (already loaded for other tasks)
    • Compares query to label descriptions and canonical examples
    • Works offline, no API dependency
  3. Zero-Shot NLI (Stage C): Optional transformer-based fallback

    • Uses facebook/bart-large-mnli for ambiguous queries
    • Toggle with INTENT_USE_NLI=true environment variable
    • Provides additional accuracy for edge cases

Intent Categories & Routing

Intent Examples Primary Providers Thresholds
Encyclopedia "origins of platypus", "history of Europe" Wikipedia, Wikidata 25% triangulation

Provider Selection Strategy

  • Intent-Based Routing: Each intent has tailored provider lists with primary pools
  • Tiered Fallbacks: Free primary β†’ Paid primary β†’ Free fallback β†’ Paid fallback
  • Vertical API Exclusion: Prevents NPS, FRED, etc. from generic searches
  • Site Decorator Filtering: Excludes vertical APIs when site: present
  • Provider Circuit Breakers: Exponential backoff for 429/403 errors
  • SerpAPI Circuit Breaker: Query deduplication, call budget (4/run), auto-trip on 429
  • Rate Limiting: Per-provider RPS controls (Nominatim: 1 RPS, SEC: 0.5 RPS)
  • Domain Circuit Breakers: Auto-disable failing domains after threshold
  • Geographic Disambiguation: Handles "Portland OR/ME" ambiguity

🎯 Adaptive Quality System

Supply-Aware Quality Gates

The system adapts thresholds dynamically based on evidence availability and intent:

Intent-Based Triangulation Thresholds

  • High Confidence (Academic, Medical, Stats): 30-35% triangulation
  • Medium Confidence (Encyclopedia, News, Travel): 25-30% triangulation
  • Flexible (Product, Local, How-to): 15-20% triangulation
  • Supply Adaptation: Further reduced when domains < 6 or cards < 25
  • Absolute Minimums: 8-10 triangulated cards based on supply

Stats Intent Special Requirements (v8.12.0)

For statistics/economic data queries, stricter requirements apply:

  • Primary Source Minimum: β‰₯50% from official statistics domains
  • Recent Primary: β‰₯3 primary sources from last 24 months
  • Triangulated Clusters: β‰₯1 cluster with 2+ primary domains
  • Allowed Primary Domains: OECD, IMF, World Bank, BEA, BLS, IRS, CBO, GAO, Eurostat, UN, NBER, Nature, Science
  • Banned Representatives: Advocacy sites (taxfoundation.org, americanprogress.org, etc.) flagged as non-representative
  • Cluster Quality: Each cluster must have β‰₯2 distinct primary domains to count as triangulated
  • Extraction-Only Facts: All Key Findings/Numbers must be directly extracted and entailed by evidence

Primary Source Requirements

  • Standard: 40% of evidence from primary sources
  • Limited Supply: 30% when primary/credible ratio < 0.5
  • Whitelisted Domains: OECD, IMF, World Bank, central banks preserved as singletons

Domain Balance

  • Default Cap: 25% max from any single domain family
  • Family Grouping: Related domains grouped (all .gov, all .edu)
  • Triangulation Priority: Triangulated cards preserved during capping
  • Few Domains: 40% cap when < 6 unique domains
  • Post-Filter Rebalancing: Reapplies caps after credibility filtering
  • Generic Diversity: Class-based injection (site:.gov, site:.edu) not specific domains
  • Smart Relaxation: Prevents over-trimming quality sources

Last-Mile Backfill

  • Triggers when within 5pp of triangulation target
  • Requires > 20% time budget remaining
  • Activates after 2+ regular backfill attempts

Adaptive Report Generation

Reports automatically scale based on evidence quality:

Tier Word Count Token Budget Triggers
Brief 600-900 ~1,200 Rapid depth, low supply, confidence < 0.55
Standard 1,100-1,600 ~2,200 Normal evidence, moderate confidence
Deep 1,800-2,800 ~3,800 Rich evidence, confidence β‰₯ 0.75, 20+ triangulated

Confidence Calculation

confidence = 0.4*triangulation + 0.3*primary_share + 0.2*domain_diversity + 0.1*(1-error_rate)

Report Features

  • Confidence Badge: 🟒 High | 🟑 Moderate | πŸ”΄ Low (null-safe)
  • Supply Context: Transparent reporting of evidence constraints
  • Adaptive Sections: Token budgets adjust per tier
  • Quality Signals: Clear explanations of any threshold adjustments
  • Insufficient Evidence Reports: Enhanced with metrics table, actionable recommendations

πŸ”’ v8.15.0 Enhanced Reporting System

Hard Quality Gates

The system now enforces strict quality gates that prevent low-quality reports:

  • Final Report Generation: Only when ALL gates pass:
    • Triangulation β‰₯ 50% (configurable)
    • Primary share β‰₯ 33% (configurable)
    • Evidence cards β‰₯ 25 (configurable)
  • Single Source of Truth: Metrics loaded from disk (metrics.json) to prevent drift
  • No Partial Reports: If gates fail, only insufficient evidence report is generated

Citation-Bound Key Numbers

Every numeric claim must have verifiable citations:

  • Support Requirements: Numbers included only if:
    • Supported by β‰₯2 distinct domains, OR
    • Supported by β‰₯1 source from PRIMARY_WHITELIST
  • Citation Binding: Each key number displays inline citations [1] [2] [3]
  • Citation Safety Section: Reports citation coverage with PASS βœ… or NEEDS ATTENTION ⚠️

Sentence-Aware Content Trimming

Professional outputs without dangling ellipses:

  • Smart Boundaries: Ends at sentence boundaries when possible
  • Abbreviation Handling: Recognizes common abbreviations (Dr., Inc., etc.)
  • Word Boundaries: Falls back to word boundaries if no sentence end found
  • Clean Ellipses: Only adds "…" when truly truncated mid-thought

Actionable Insufficient Evidence Reports

When gates fail, provides concrete next steps:

  • Intent-Specific Guidance:
    • Stats: Query OECD/World Bank SDMX endpoints
    • Medical: Search PubMed systematic reviews
    • Regulatory: Check official .gov sources
  • Troubleshooting Tips: Diagnoses low triangulation, primary share issues
  • Backfill Strategy: Clear steps to improve evidence quality
  • Acceptance Thresholds: Explicit criteria for report generation

Source Strategy Transparency

Documents actual provider usage and backfill policy:

  • Providers Used: Lists actual providers from the run
  • Primary Source Criteria: Shows whitelisted domains by category
  • Backfill Policy: Explains whether backfill was needed and why
  • Search Approach: Documents intent-based strategy and filters applied

Report Section Parity

All reports include consistent sections:

  • Executive Summary (sentence-trimmed findings)
  • Key Findings (triangulated, multi-domain)
  • Key Numbers (with citations)
  • Evidence Supply (metrics from disk)
  • Citation Safety (validation status)
  • Source Distribution (domain breakdown with πŸ”· markers)
  • Appendix (links to supporting documents)

Evidence Validity Guarantees

Non-Empty Snippet Invariant

Every evidence card is guaranteed to have a non-empty snippet:

  1. Original snippet if available
  2. Title prefixed with "Content: "
  3. Domain-based fallback: "Source content from {domain}"
  4. Ultimate fallback: "Content available at source"

Snippet Repair Chain

For enriched evidence, automatic repair attempts:

  1. Best quote extraction
  2. Quotes list scanning
  3. Abstract fallback (CrossRef for DOIs)
  4. Supporting text extraction
  5. Claim text usage
  6. Synthesized snippet from metadata

Validation Enhancements

  • Non-fatal warnings for repairable issues
  • Automatic field population for missing data
  • Score boundary enforcement (0-1 range)
  • Schema compliance with self-healing

  • RUN_STATE.json: Tracks execution status (RUNNING β†’ COMPLETED/ABORTED)
  • Temp + Rename: All file writes use atomic operations preventing partial outputs

Unified Metrics System

  • Single Computation: research_system.quality.metrics_v2.compute_metrics() called once
  • FinalMetrics Dataclass: Consistent object used across all reports and headers
  • Hard-Gate Enforcement: gates_pass() prevents final report when quality insufficient
  • Metrics Synchronization: Headers, body text, and metrics.json use same values

Evidence Canonicalization

  • DOI Deduplication: research_system.evidence.canonicalize.canonical_id() prevents duplicates
  • Mirror Collapse: sgp.fas.org β†’ congress.gov, everycrsreport.com β†’ congress.gov
  • CRS Report Numbers: Extracts R12345, RL1234, RS1234 patterns for canonical grouping
  • Inflation Prevention: Metrics count unique canonical sources, not mirrors

Domain Tier Scholarly Weighting

  • TIER1 (1.00): Official statistics (.gov, international orgs), peer-reviewed journals
  • TIER2 (0.75): CRS/CBO/GAO reports, NBER working papers, national statistics

  • TIER4 (0.20): Media, encyclopedias, blogs
  • Primary Marking: Only TIER1 + peer-reviewed marked as is_primary=True

Stats-Intent Specialized Pipeline

  • Phase 1: Official providers (OECD, IMF, World Bank, Eurostat)
  • Phase 2: Data fallback (Treasury, IRS, Census, CBO, CRS, BLS, BEA)
  • Phase 3: General providers demoted to context-only (not counted in metrics)
  • Admissibility: Requires numeric content, excludes partisan sources
  • Jurisdiction Filtering: Excludes mismatched geographic sources

Evidence-Number Binding Enforcement

  • Mandatory Binding: Every numeric bullet must bind to specific evidence card
  • Quote Span Required: Each binding includes exact quote supporting the number
  • Placeholder Rejection: [increasing], [TBD] values cause binding failure
  • Report Blocking: No final report generated if bindings incomplete

Enhanced Quote Rescue

  • Numeric Density: β‰₯3% tokens must be numerals for stats quotes
  • Primary Only: Only quotes from is_primary=True sources admitted
  • Pattern Detection: Uses regex to identify percentages, rates, counts
  • Quality Floor: Non-numeric quotes require explicit claim_like_high_conf flag

Credibility-Weighted Representative Selection

  • Medoid Algorithm: Selects cluster representative by minimizing weighted distances
  • Topic Similarity Floor: 50% similarity to original query required
  • Domain Trust Weighting: TIER1 sources prioritized over think tanks/media
  • Prevents Bias: No more partisan talking points as cluster representatives

Partisan Content & Jurisdiction Filtering

  • Partisan Exclusion: Heritage Foundation, Center for American Progress, JEC partisan pages
  • Geographic Matching: UK sources excluded from US tax queries
  • International Org Exception: OECD/IMF/UN always allowed regardless of jurisdiction
  • Stats Intent Strictness: Partisan filtering enforced for statistical queries

Robust Academic Search

  • OpenAlex Primary: Uses proper search= parameter instead of filter=title.search:
  • Query Sanitization: Removes quotes and special characters causing 400 errors
  • Crossref Fallback: Automatic fallback when OpenAlex fails
  • Format Normalization: Converts Crossref results to OpenAlex-compatible format
  • Citation Enrichment: Marks peer-reviewed venues, adds credibility scores

CI/CD Pipeline

  • Automated testing on push/PR
  • Python 3.11 compatibility checks
  • Schema validation tests
  • Adaptive system integration tests
  • Evidence repair validation
  • Lazy Settings initialization for proper env var loading
  • CONTACT_EMAIL compliance for API requirements

πŸ†• v8.11.0 Comprehensive Quality Improvements

1. Quality Gate Logic Fix

  • Never emit Final Report when gates fail: Fixed critical logic flaw where both insufficient evidence report AND final report were generated
  • Single source of truth: When quality gates fail (primary_share < 40% or triangulation < 25%), ONLY insufficient evidence report is created
  • Early return logic: Prevents downstream report generation when evidence quality is insufficient

2. Safe Datetime Formatting

  • New utility module: utils/datetime_safe.py handles all datetime formatting robustly
  • Handles all input types: float (epoch), datetime objects, None, strings
  • No more crashes: Prevents 'float' object has no attribute 'strftime' errors
  • Duration formatting: Human-readable duration strings (e.g., "5m 23s", "1h 15m")

3. Strict Claim Schema & Validation

  • New claim schema: reporting/claim_schema.py enforces structured claim validation
  • Required fields for numbers: Must have value, unit, geography, time period, and definition
  • Source classification: Official stats, peer review, gov memo, think tank, media, blog
  • Partisan detection: Automatically tags claims by source alignment
  • Confidence scoring: Claims scored by triangulation, source quality, and credibility

4. Enhanced Key Numbers Extraction

  • Context required: Numbers must have units, time period, and geographic context
  • Triangulation required: Only numbers from 2+ independent sources
  • Proper formatting: "25.1% β€” effective federal tax rate (US, 2023) [2 sources]"
  • No placeholders: Returns empty list if no valid numbers found (allows template guards)

5. Template Guards for Report Sections

  • No empty sections: Sections only rendered if they have valid content
  • No placeholder text: Removes "N/A", "No robust numbers", etc.
  • Conditional rendering: Key Numbers section skipped entirely if no valid numbers
  • Meaningful fallbacks: "No publishable findings met evidence thresholds" when appropriate

6. Source-Aware Clustering

  • Prevents mixing: Statistical sources not mixed with advocacy/opinion sources
  • Claim type classification: numeric_measure, mechanism_or_theory, opinion_advocacy, news_context
  • Source compatibility: Official stats don't cluster with think tanks for numeric claims
  • Stricter thresholds: 0.62 similarity for numeric claims (vs 0.40 for others)
  • Quality scoring: Clusters ranked by domain diversity, source quality, triangulation

7. Comprehensive Test Suite

  • 10 focused tests: Cover all critical paths and edge cases
  • Quality gate test: Verifies no final report when metrics fail
  • Datetime safety test: Tests all input types and edge cases
  • Claim validation test: Ensures only valid claims pass filters
  • Template guard test: Verifies no empty/placeholder sections
  • Integration tests: Full pipeline validation
