Just to add to that: The Discord backend is a massive Elixir (Erlang) codebase. Elixir (and the Erlang VM) are 'the' battle-tested actor implementation, powering telecommunication systems since the mid-80s... However, given immutable data structures, some presence-related things weren't not performant enough for Discord, to they wanted to call out into "native" code, and Rust as a safe platform gave them the assurance that the native code could not bring the Erlang VM down https://blog.discord.com/using-rust-to-scale-elixir-for-11-million-concurrent-users-c6f19fc029d3
