"Thank you to CREATE SE4AI and the Applied AI Institute for creating this incredible program that empowers women and gender non-conforming undergrads and grads who are passionate about AI. Mentoring these past few months has been an amazing experience, and honestly, I've learned just as much from my mentee as she probably learned from me. Programs like these are making sure that the right tools and foundation are there for these participants, so they know they are not alone and can step into the world feeling much more empowered."

Women in Engineering (WIE) - March 18, 2023

On March 18th , CREATE SE4AI took part in WIE Inspire WIE Empower, an annual event hosted by the Women in Engineering (WIE) student association at the Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science at Concordia University. Through their various outreach and mentorship activities, WIE encourages young women to explore engineering and computer science as career options.

This year, WIE welcomed over 80 high school girls aged 12-17 to Concordia for an exciting day of inspiration and exploration. After a welcome address by Dr. Gina Cody, students participated in 4 hands-on, industry-led workshops. CREATE SE4AI trainees and Master’s students Divya Kamath (Queen’s University), Lorena Barreto (Concordia University) and Khaled Badran (Concordia University), along with Program Coordinator Lori Akiyama developed and delivered a fun, interactive workshop on AI and Chatbots to 4 groups of students. The goals of the workshop were to:

  1. Introduce the basic concepts of AI and chatbots to the students
  2. Encourage the students to develop confidence interacting with technology
  3. Stimulate a discussion of ethics of AI in society through a group reflection exercise

At the end of the workshop, the students shared their experiences interacting with chatbots and reflected on the importance of creating responsible and ethical AI.

CREATE was proud to contribute to this important initiative, and we look forward to more opportunities to engage with youth and inspire them to learn more about software engineering and AI in the future.

The Gender Equity Mentoring in AI (GEMinAI) Program celebrated the end of a successful first year on May 24th. Mentors and mentees from the program's inaugural cohort gathered at 4th Space at Concordia to share stories of their mentoring journey. Jasbir Kooner, MBA (Concordia) and Director, IT and Cybersecurity at Englobe was one of the 13 industry mentors who participated in GEMinAI. Jasbir shared her experience with the group:

"Thank you to CREATE SE4AI and the Applied AI Institute for creating this incredible program that empowers women and gender non-conforming undergrads and grads who are passionate about AI. Mentoring these past few months has been an amazing experience, and honestly, I've learned just as much from my mentee as she probably learned from me. Programs like these are making sure that the right tools and foundation are there for these participants, so they know they are not alone and can step into the world feeling much more empowered."

Applications for both mentors and mentees will be accepted over the summer and the next cohort will run from October 2024 to May 2025. For more information on how you can get involved, please contact Lori Akiyama at lori.akiyama@concordia.ca.

SOEN 691: Engineering AI-Based Software Systems

Background

The development, deployment and servicing of AI-based systems requires specialized training since such systems tend to have fundamental differences compared to traditional software systems. For example, traditional software systems are written to implement a specific behaviour that is expected of the system, whereas, AI-based systems infer their behaviour from training data. In such cases, technical aspects such as debugging if something is wrong becomes much harder since there is no ‘expected output’. The goal of the course is to provide graduate students with the basic and fundamental technical background while exercising SE concepts in the context of an AI-based software system.

Course Description

This course introduces key concepts related to the engineering of AI-based software systems. Topics include requirements and architectures of AI-based software systems, data validation and management, model selection, quality assurance, deployment and continuous delivery of AI-based software systems. Additionally, special topics on interpreting and monitoring models, and operations in large-scale AI-based system will be included. A course project involving a real-world open source AI-based software system will be required.

A tentative list of the topics that will be covered in this course is given in the tentative schedule section at the botom of the page.

Evaluation Criteria

Component%
Class participation10
Paper critiques & activities20
Project proposal10
Research project40
Quiz20

You must pass the quizzes and the course project to pass the course.

Paper Critiques

We will have two assigned research papers on most weeks. Each student is expected to send a critique of one of the papers that are being presented. The critique should include a brief summary of the paper, at least three strengths of the paper and at least three weaknesses of the paper. For the other paper, each student is required to submit a summary of the paper. The critiques and paper summaries are due at noon on Fridays before the class. All paper critiques will be graded in detail.

Research Project

A large portion of the course deliverables is a course research project. You are expected to work on the course project in groups of 4-5 students. Each group is expected to write a research paper by the end of the semester. The topic is to be determined with the instructor. Examples include a new contribution on a specific related topic, a survey paper of a related topic (typically involves surveying 30 – 60 papers), or building a tool to support engineering AI-based software systems.

Tentative Schedule

The table below provides a summary of the material that will be covered during the course as well as a tentative schedule. Please check the course web page for any changes. We will also update the table weekly to include the PDF of the Slides of each topic.

Dr. Marie-Pierre Habas Gerard

Bio

21 years of consulting experience in international firms in the field of digital transformation and 7 years spent in University Research and Development in Computational & quantical Mathematics . With transformational leadership, I am able to define the digital transformation roadmap at the strategic level as well as coordinate the teams to deliver it in accordance with the milestones. Currently Lead of CGI's Multisectoral Artificial Intelligence Practice, I created the multidisciplinary team, defined the Business Plan and the 2022-2025 roadmap as well as the manufacturing methodology for our machine learning solutions and operational research.

Previously Partner and Head of Deliverables of my startup in machine learning and natural language processing (NLP/NLU) and Lead of the Artificial Intelligence Practice of RCGT, I took charge of the recruitment of the Data Science team and the implementation of software manufacturing stages, industrialization and testing activities.

Very comfortable in the management of multidisciplinary teams, I like to create links and value between academic profiles, Product teams and delivery teams.

Through my international professional experiences and my personal encounters, I have been able to develop a high-level vision of the application of artificial intelligence to the business challenges of clients. I was also able to measure the necessary changes that organizations must already integrate in order to welcome new profiles and behaviors within their teams. AI is an exceptional vector of change and I like to consider its benefits at different levels, both human and technical.

Program Objectives

The objective of the SE4AI CREATE program is to fill the major shortage in HQP that can develop, deploy and service AI-based software systems and equally provide the HQP with a solid background on ethical and social understanding of AI. Our program is driven by six key training objectives:

  • Prepare trainees that are knowledgeable in both technical and social aspects needed to develop, deploy and service AI-based software systems.
  • Provide trainees with real-life experiences where they can be exposed to challenges and best practices involving the development of AI-based software systems.
  • Bridge the gap between practice and academia by offering trainees opportunities to interact closely with practitioners and non-technical disciplines in order to train them on effective methods to communicate impactful and sustainable academic innovations.
  • Provide trainees with opportunities to develop highly sought-after professional skills such as communication, collaboration, leadership, entrepreneurship, and mentorship.
  • Expose trainees to the latest research (both technical and social aspects) in the development, deployment, and servicing of AI-based software systems and ensure that, by completing world-class research projects and theses, they will be prepared to play leadership roles in shaping the future of this very important area.
  • Enable trainees to customize their training program to better suit their needs and aspirations.
