Description

@lechaps

Summary

Create an Architecture Practices Radar to map, visualize, and communicate the maturity, adoption level, and strategic positioning of key architectural practices within our organization.

Goal

Provide architects, teams, and leaders with a shared, accessible view of:

  • What practices we currently use
  • Which ones are emerging
  • Which ones should be promoted
  • Which ones should be re-evaluated or retired

This will help align our architecture work and support decision-making.

Motivation

  • Increase transparency on architectural practices
  • Support onboarding and knowledge sharing
  • Encourage continuous improvement
  • Align with industry standards and models (inspired by ThoughtWorks Tech Radar)
  • Provide a reference for coaching and architectural governance

Scope

The radar could include quadrants such as:

  • Methods & Practices (e.g., ADRs, Domain Storytelling)
  • Architecture Styles & Patterns (e.g., Event-driven, Hexagonal)
  • Documentation Approaches (e.g., C4 model, arc42)
  • Architecture Governance & Collaboration Practices

Each practice would be associated with a ring:

  • Adopt
  • Trial
  • Assess
  • Hold

Deliverables

  • A first version of the radar (static or interactive)
  • A documented process for updating the radar
  • A shared space (GitLab, Confluence, Notion, etc.) to host it

Implementation Ideas

  • Use an existing open-source Tech Radar generator
  • Or build a simple custom visualization (JSON + JS)
  • Update through Merge Requests to ensure collaboration

Acceptance Criteria

  • Radar is created and accessible to all
  • Practices list is validated by maintainers
  • Clear instructions for contribution are documented
  • Visualization is easy to understand and maintain

Open Questions

  • Should we start with a beta version limited to a few practices?
  • Which tool should we use to visualize the radar?
  • How often should we update it?
