The notebooks folder contains Jypyter notebooks for each lesson.

Annotated Bibliography

The following are papers and other sources relevant for the class:

  • Wagenmakers, Eric-Jan (2007). A practical solution to the pervasive problems of p values. Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, 14(5), 779--804. PDF

    • Covers the issues with standard frequentist approaches for calculating p-values and presents an argument for Bayesian approaches and, in particular, Bayes factor.
  • Kruschke, John K. (2013). Bayesian Estimation Supersedes the t Test. Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 142(2), 573--603. PDF

    • Excellent paper explaining and justifying a Bayesian replacement to the standard t-test.
  • Gelman, Andrew (2006). Prior distributions for variance parameters in hierarchical models. Bayesian Analysis, 1(3), 515--533. PDF

    • Long story short, use half Cauchy priors for variance parameters.
  • Forstmann, B. U., Tittgemeyer, M., Wagenmakers, E. J., Derrfuss, J., Imperati, D., & Brown, S. (2011). The speed-accuracy tradeoff in the elderly brain: a structural model-based approach. Journal of Neuroscience, 31(47), 17242-17249. PDF

    • Paper applying LBA to the speed--accuracy tradeoff.
  • Brown, S.D., & Heathcote, A. J. (2008). The simplest complete model of choice response time: Linear ballistic accumulation. Cognitive Psychology, 57, 153-178. PDF

    • The first presentation of the LBA model.
  • Navarro, D. J., & Fuss, I. G. (2009). Fast and accurate calculations for first-passage times in Wiener diffusion models. Journal of Mathematical Psychology, 53(4), 222-230. PDF

    • Paper illustrating fast and accurate estimation of WFPT models.
  • Hawkins, G., & Heathcote, A. (2021). Racing against the clock: Evidence-based vs. time-based decisions. Psychological Review. PDF

    • Independent accumulator model with a timer.
  • McClelland, J. L., (2009). The place of modeling in cognitive science. Topics in Cognitive Science, 1, 11-38. HTML

  • Heathcote A, Brown SD, & Wagenmakers E-J, "An Introduction to Good Practices in Cognitive Modeling", in An Introduction to Model-Based Cognitive Neuroscience, Springer, E-J Wagenmakers (ed), 1-14. PDF

    • An excellent introduction providing some rules to follow when developing and presenting cognitive models.
