Often when we take pictures using digital cameras, the name of the image file is something like 'DSC004334' or 'IMG0034' . While there is nothing wrong with this, I wanted my pictures to be arranged by year, month I took them. Unfortunately I had around 2000 files to rename. I thought there should be a tool for this, there were but none I could find for Unix. For Windows there were plenty. So I decided to write my own for Linux. This tool will read the Exif data from the image and then rename it to year,dd,mm_hour:min:time Although not perfect by any means, it got my work done. I hope it helps you as well. Please make sure you take a backup of your picture before you use this. I do not gurantee anything. Usage: python rename_images.py <path to directory where your pictures are kept> Some points to note: 1) Keep file_recursive.py in the same directory as rename_images.py 2) Tested with Python2.6 3) The directory can have other files, they won;t be modified. Only the image files will be. 4) If the file has no Exif data, then the name won;t be changed Todo: 1) Give user option for format (mm/dd/yy or dd/mm/yy or something else) 2) add GUI
