We don't have any benchmarks covering compactions, and it would probably be fruitful to run some targeted benchmarks and optimize compaction codepaths. There have been some recent improvements that have fallen out of profiles from CockroachDB benchmarks (#1161, #1160).

As @sumeerbhola points out, we should also benchmark compaction range tombstone codepaths: #1182 (review)
