Keep Browser Open On Closing Last Tab

Is there a way to prevent the browser from closing when I close the last active tab? What I want is for Beaker to spawn a New Tab when I close the last tab, instead of closing the whole browser.

I know this is the default behaviour in most browsers but firefox has a flag and chromium-based ones have extensions to alter this behaviour.
