temp readings not coming through

I have a Kaldi Fortis roaster. I have installed the current version of Artisan (as of 01-01-25), installed the CH341ser.exe serial driver, configured Artisan for the Kaldi Fortis (supported roaster), tried each of the three com port settingn options (3,4 & 5) and still no luck having the temps come through to Artisan from the Center 306 Data Logger Thermometer. I appreciate any suggestions you may have.

The Kaldi machine configuration is documented here on the Artisan website. It is for interfacing to a Kaldi with a MODBUS RTU connection. You mention using the Center 306 to measure temperatures on your Kaldi. That is a different configuration and requires setting the Meter to "Center 306" in Artisan's Config>> Device dialog. Be sure you choose the right Comm Port in the Ports Configuration. The Center requires a special cable to connect with your computer that should have come with the meter. Finally, the recommended driver is the Silicon Labs CP210x.

Thank you Dave!, that's very helpful. Once I select the Center 306 in the Config / Device Assignment window, do I need to make any other changes to the settings in that window? (see attached screen shot of the open window)

For choosing the right Comm Port, do you mean making sure the Comm Port selection in the Device Assignment window matches the Comm Port selected in the window that comes up when going through the Config / Machine set up process for the Kaldi Fortis? If not, please advise. FYI, I do have the cable, it came with the roaster when I bought it. Thank you again for all your help - much appreciated.

Let's forget the Config>> Machine>> Kaldi Fortis setup. It does not apply to your machine with the Center meter. The settings in the Device Assignment dialog shown in your screen shot above are fine. Click OK. This will take you to the 'ET/BT' tab of the Ports Configuration dialog (you can also get here from the menu Config>> Ports>> 'ET/BT' tab). This is where you will set the Comm Port, Baud Rate, etc. to work with your Center.

Since you previously ran through the machine setup let's turn off the Modbus settings the setup created. Go to the 'Modbus' tab in Ports Configuration. Set every Slave entry to 0 (zero). Click OK.

Prior to you writing, I completed the driver installation process as described on the 'CP210x Universal Windows Driver Release Notes' text document (rebooted after completing those steps). It was described as 'Silicon Labs Virtual COM Port (VCP) Universal Driver for Windows 10 version 1803 and later, windows 11, Package version: 11.4.0 and Release date: 2024-12-19' I have Windows 11 Pro on a ThinkPad X1 laptop.

After reading, 'let's forget the Config / machine ....' I completed a Factor Reset from the Help tab. I then confirmed that all the slave settings were zero on the Mobus tab within the Ports Configuration window. I'm still not clear on which Comm Port to use. From within the Ports Configuration window, I've tried setting the Comm Port under the ET/BT to 4 and then again, within the Modbus window, to 4 as well. With the Center 306 on and connected, I opened Artisan, but it's still not showing any temp readings - gives the message, 'unable to open serial port.' I just noticed that some of the other Comm Port settings aren't the same between the ET/BT tab and the Modbus tab (assuming they should be the same?). The Baud rate is different (9600 on the former screen and 115200 on the latter screen) and the Timeout settings are different as well. Sorry to be so inept with this technical matter. I'm wondering if I should buy a different temperature recorder, would that make it an easier set up process?

Can you confirm the driver is properly installed? Why not just download the Window Universal Driver from SI Labs (follow the links from the Artisan web site here) and run the driver's installer program?

The Modbus Comm Port is irrelevant to connecting to the Center. Only the ET/BT Comm Port settings matter. I don't know that COM4 is the correct port for your machine. Try all the comm port numbers when the Center is connected. The baud rate must also match with what is set on the Center itself. Maybe this discussion will be helpful.

Thanks again Dave, I appreciate your patience.
Regarding the driver, that is the one I downloaded - there is no installer program - that's why I included the screen capture of the directions.
The discussion link was helpful. I was able to figure out that the correct port was 3, not 4 or 5. The temps come up now in Artisan! It's a miracle :) Now to go through some initial configuration settings for roasting. I'm going to go through some of the tutorials on the Artisan site. Best, Robert
