Can I condition the assignment of a mutex over a template, based on a workflow argument?

I'm looking for something like:

I believe you can achieve this with some indirection, i.e. use a different template depending on your condition, which could be the same underlying template, but with a mutex or not. Templates can reference each other so you can do that without too much duplication.
