This change prevents the loop vectorizer from vectorizing when all of the vector types it generates will be scalarized. I've run into this problem on the PPC's QPX vector ISA, which only holds floating-point vector types. The loop vectorizer will, however, happily vectorize loops with purely integer computation. Since all of these operations are scalarized, their cost (aside from the uniform ones) are indeed VF*(scalar cost), just as the model suggests. In fact, the larger the VF picked, the lower the relative overhead from the loop itself (and the induction-variable update and check), and so in a sense, picking the largest VF here is the right thing to do. The problem is that vectorizing like this, where all of the vectors will be scalarized in the backend, isn't really vectorizing, but rather interleaving. By itself, this would be okay, but then the vectorizer itself also interleaves, and that's where the problem manifests itself. There's aren't actually enough scalar registers to support the normal interleave factor multiplied by a factor of VF (8 in this example). In other words, the problem with this is that our register-pressure heuristic does not account for scalarization. While we might want to improve our register-pressure heuristic, I don't think this is the right motivating case for that work. Here we have a more-basic problem: The job of the vectorizer is to vectorize things (interleaving aside), and if the IR it generates won't generate any actual vector code, then something is wrong. Thus, if every type looks like it will be scalarized (i.e. will be split into VF or more parts), then don't consider that VF. This is not a problem specific to PPC/QPX, however. The problem comes up under SSE on x86 too, and as such, this change fixes PR26837 too. I've added Sanjay's reduced test case from PR26837 to this commit. This combine transforms things like and w8, w0, #0xfffffff0 movz w9, #5 orr w0, w8, w9 into movz w8, #5 bfxil w0, w8, #0, #4 The combine is tuned to make sure we always reduce the number of instructions. We avoid churning code for what is expected to be performance neutral changes (e.g., converted AND+OR to OR+BFI). What happened here is that in the new PM there is a bunch of new copying (actually, moving) and so this reads the HasProfileData member in situations where it used to not be read. It used to only be read strictly in the "runOnFunction" method and its callees, where is *is* initialized (even after my patch). So this ends up being benign as far as functional behavior of the compiler (since we set HasProfileData in the "runImpl" method before we ever make decisions based on it). It's awesome that UBSan caught this. It highlights one more thing to watch out for when porting passes. This is essentially a recommit of r285893, but with a correctness fix. The problem of the original commit was that this: bic r5, r7, #31 cbz r5, .LBB2_10 got rewritten into: lsrs r5, r7, #5 beq .LBB2_10 The result in destination register r5 is not the same and this is incorrect when r5 is not dead. So this fix includes checking the uses of the AND destination register. And also, compared to the original commit, some regression tests didn't need changing anymore because of this extra check. For completeness, this was the original commit message: For the common pattern (CMPZ (AND x, #bitmask), #0), we can do some more efficient instruction selection if the bitmask is one consecutive sequence of set bits (32 - clz(bm) - ctz(bm) == popcount(bm)). 1) If the bitmask touches the LSB, then we can remove all the upper bits and set the flags by doing one LSLS. 2) If the bitmask touches the MSB, then we can remove all the lower bits and set the flags with one LSRS. 3) If the bitmask has popcount == 1 (only one set bit), we can shift that bit into the sign bit with one LSLS and change the condition query from NE/EQ to MI/PL (we could also implement this by shifting into the carry bit and branching on BCC/BCS). 4) Otherwise, we can emit a sequence of LSLS+LSRS to remove the upper and lower zero bits of the mask. 1-3 require only one 16-bit instruction and can elide the CMP. 4 requires two 16-bit instructions but can elide the CMP and doesn't require materializing a complex immediate, so is also a win. Summary: The code comments indicate that no effort has been spent on handling load/stores when the size isn't a multiple of the byte size correctly. However, the code only avoided types smaller than 8 bits. So for example a load of an i28 could still be considered as a candidate for vectorization. This patch adjusts the code to behave according to the code comment. Summary: We no longer add vectors of pointers as candidates for load/store vectorization. It does not seem to work anyway, but without this patch we can end up in asserts when trying to create casts between an integer type and the pointer of vectors type. r335553 with the non-trivial unswitching of switches. The code correctly updated most aspects of the CFG and analyses, but missed some crucial aspects: 1) When multiple cases have the same successor, we unswitch that a single time and replace the switch with a direct branch. The CFG here is correct, but the target of this direct branch may have had a PHI node with multiple entries in it. 2) When we still have to clone a successor of the switch into an unswitched copy of the loop, we'll delete potentially multiple edges entering this successor, not just one. 3) We also have to delete multiple edges entering the successors in the original loop when they have to be retained. 4) When the "retained successor" *also* occurs as a case successor, we just assert failed everywhere. This doesn't happen very easily because its always valid to simply drop the case -- the retained successor for switches is always the default successor. However, it is likely possible through some contrivance of different loop passes, unrolling, and simplifying for this to occur in practice and certainly there is nothing "invalid" about the IR so this pass needs to handle it. 5) In the case of #4, we also will replace these multiple edges with a direct branch much like in #1 and need to collapse the entries in any PHI nodes to a single enrty. All of this stems from the delightful fact that the same successor can show up in multiple parts of the switch terminator, and each of these are considered a distinct edge for the purpose of PHI nodes (and iterating the successors and predecessors) but not for unswitching itself, the dominator tree, or many other things. For the record, I intensely dislike this "feature" of the IR in large part because of the complexity it causes in passes like this. We already have a ton of logic building sets and handling duplicates, and we just had to add a bunch more. I've added a complex test case that covers all five of the above failure modes. I've also added a variation on it where #4 and #5 occur in loop exit, adding fun where we have an LCSSA PHI node with "multiple entries" despite have dedicated exits. There were no additional issues found by this, but it seems a useful corner case to cover with testing. One thing that working on all of this code has made painfully clear for me as well is how amazingly inefficient our PHI node representation is (in terms of the in-memory data structures and the APIs used to update them). This code has truly marvelous complexity bounds because every time we remove an entry from a PHI node we do a linear scan to find it and then a linear update to the data structure to remove it. We could in theory batch all of the PHI node updates into a single linear walk of the operands making this much more efficient, but the APIs fight hard against this and the fact that we have to handle duplicates in the peculiar manner we do (removing all but one in some cases) makes even implementing that very tedious and annoying. Anyways, none of this is new here or specific to loop unswitching. Summary: Scanning blocks in sub-loops for uses is unnecessary, as they were already handled while dealing with the containing sub-loop. This speeds up LCSSA for highly nested loops. For the test case in PR37202, it halves the time spent in LCSSA. In cases were we won't be able to skip any blocks, the additional lookup should be negligible. If there is only a single available value, all uses must be dominated by the single value and there is no need to search for a reaching definition. This drastically speeds up LCSSA in some cases. For the test case from PR37202, it speeds up LCSSA construction by 4 times. Introduction ============ This patch added intial support for bpf program compile once and run everywhere (CO-RE). The main motivation is for bpf program which depends on kernel headers which may vary between different kernel versions. The initial discussion can be found at https://lwn.net/Articles/773198/. Currently, bpf program accesses kernel internal data structure through bpf_probe_read() helper. The idea is to capture the kernel data structure to be accessed through bpf_probe_read() and relocate them on different kernel versions. On each host, right before bpf program load, the bpfloader will look at the types of the native linux through vmlinux BTF, calculates proper access offset and patch the instruction. To accommodate this, three intrinsic functions preserve_{array,union,struct}_access_index are introduced which in clang will preserve the base pointer, struct/union/array access_index and struct/union debuginfo type information. Later, bpf IR pass can reconstruct the whole gep access chains without looking at gep itself. This patch did the following: . An IR pass is added to convert preserve_*_access_index to global variable who name encodes the getelementptr access pattern. The global variable has metadata attached to describe the corresponding struct/union debuginfo type. . An SimplifyPatchable MachineInstruction pass is added to remove unnecessary loads. . The BTF output pass is enhanced to generate relocation records located in .BTF.ext section. Typical CO-RE also needs support of global variables which can be assigned to different values to different hosts. For example, kernel version can be used to guard different versions of codes. This patch added the support for patchable externals as well. Summary: This patch is part of a patch series to add support for FileCheck numeric expressions. This specific patch lift the restriction for a numeric expression to either be a variable definition or a numeric expression to try to match. This commit allows a numeric variable to be set to the result of the evaluation of a numeric expression after it has been matched successfully. When it happens, the variable is allowed to be used on the same line since its value is known at match time. It also makes use of this possibility to reuse the parsing code to parse a command-line definition by crafting a mirror string of the -D option with the equal sign replaced by a colon sign, e.g. for option '-D#NUMVAL=10' it creates the string '-D#NUMVAL=10 (parsed as [[#NUMVAL:10]])' where the numeric expression is parsed to define NUMVAL. This result in a few tests needing updating for the location diagnostics on top of the tests for the new feature. It also enables empty numeric expression which match any number without defining a variable. This is done here rather than in commit #5 of the patch series because it requires to dissociate automatic regex insertion in RegExStr from variable definition which would make commit #5 even bigger than it already is.
