How do I publish a package to private github repository

I'm encountering an error when attempting to publish a package to my organization's private GitHub repository using the pkl client. The pkl project package command results in the following error:

An unexpected error has occurred. Would you mind filing a bug report?

org.pkl.core.packages.PackageLoadError: Received invalid dependency metadata for package `package://<PrivateRepo>@0.0.1` when making request `GET https://<PrivateRepo>@0.0.1`:
Malformed JSON: Expected value at 2:1.

This leads me to believe that the pkl client is unable to authenticate with the private repository. How can I resolve this authentication issue and successfully publish my package?
