Just one small comment but otherwise LGTM.

Should this be Optional[Model] per #9416? Note I presume that the run methods should have consistent return type.

My take is that the abstract is defined has Optional[Model] and the implementations can return None or Model. If we set (for example) create.run -> Optional[Model]` then I should check for the model's existence on the return from: https://github.com/apache/incubator-superset/blob/master/superset/dashboards/api.py#L164.

And I'm assuming that the commands succeed and return or raise. What do you think?

On the other hand we can make them more coherent and always expect Optional[Model] this can make future implementation more safely "blind" to the command ifself, just run run

I prefer the later, i.e., all the run signatures having the same return type. It helps to ensures consistency both now and for future classes.

Ended up reverting typing on command to a more explicit type, following @villebro comments and reasoning around:

  • We want to migrate logic implemented on models to commands and the return types for Command.run() will vary a lot
  • Optional[Model] will not cover all future use cases and will force us to implement logic that is unnecessary such has testing if the run method returned something, when it will always return of raise
  • We will not be able to implement a single return type for all Command.run() unless creating a very big type definition

@dpgaspar would you mind updating this line as well to ensure consistency?

return self.response(201, id=new_model.id, result=item.data)
if new_model:
return self.response(201, id=new_model.id, result=item.data)
raise DashboardCreateFailedError()

I think the return type of BaseDAO.delete should be added in this PR. Also, I think there are some unnecessary Optionals here, should probably verify that they are really needed.

Isn't BaseDAO.create returning Model, ie. this should also do the same? And if so, the changes above should probably also reflect this.

BaseDAO.delete seems to always return Model (this should be added to the signature in superset/dao/base/BaseDAO.delete), ie. this should also do the same?

If we know that the return types will vary, and we expect the scope to grow in the future, I personally feel it makes sense to keep the parent signature fairly wide to avoid a bunch of Unions, hence probably good to return Any at this point. Also, by specifying an as explicit return type as possible in the implementations, we can convey context on what types of results are possible, avoiding unnecessary testing of is Nones and isinstances in the calling code.

@john-bodley I'm setting base has Any, a bit wide, another option could be maintaining Optional[Model]

* feat: [explore] don't save filters inherited from a dashboard (#9340)

* feat: [explore] don't save filters inherited from a dashboard

When navigating to explore from a dashboard context, the current
dashboard filter(s) are passed along to explore so that the context is
kept. So say you're filtering on "country=Romania", in your dashboard
and pivot to explore, that filter is still there and keep on exploring.

Now a common issue is that you'll want to make some tweak to your chart
that are unrelated to the filter, say toggling the legend off for
instance, and then save it. Now you back to your dashboard and even
though you started with an "all countries" dashboard, with a global
filter on country, now that one chart is stuck on "Romania". Typically
you notice this when filtering on something else, say "Italy" and then
that one chart now has two mutually exclusive filters, and show "No data".

Now, the fix is to flag the filter as "extra" (that's the not-so-good internal
name we use for these inherited filters) and make it clear that that
specific filter is special and won't be saved when saving the chart.
