1. A multinational software company is developing different IT based projects for different clients across the globe. For past one year it is observed that most of their projects, when

delivered to the customer did not fulfill the customers’ expectations. During the testing phase it was found lot of defects which require more time and resources to fix them. Even the final product delivered to the customer did not full fill their expectation. As a result, most of their projects fail or they have to modify the project in order to make it according to the customer’s expectations. Increasing customers complain and their dissatisfaction forced the top management to take corrective action. Now Company hired you as a project manager. So as a project manager: a. Identify the reasons why project fails? b. Give the recommendation in order to avoid the failure

Technical Analysis and Recommendations to Prevent IT Project Failures

(a) Technical Reasons for Project Failures

  1. Poor Requirements Engineering:

    • Ambiguities in Specifications: Lack of detailed functional and non-functional requirements, resulting in inconsistent implementation.
    • Insufficient Modeling: No use of Unified Modeling Language (UML), Data Flow Diagrams (DFD), or Entity-Relationship Diagrams (ERD) to represent requirements clearly.
    • Traceability Gaps: No Requirements Traceability Matrix (RTM), making it hard to map requirements to deliverables.
  2. Deficient Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) Processes:

    • Unstructured Development Approach: Absence of a standardized SDLC methodology (e.g., Waterfall, Agile, or Hybrid).
    • Lack of Code Standards: Absence of coding guidelines, resulting in inconsistencies across the codebase.
    • Insufficient Version Control: No effective use of tools like Git, leading to versioning conflicts and rollback issues.
  3. Ineffective Testing Practices:

    • Low Test Coverage: Insufficient unit, integration, and system-level test coverage, allowing defects to remain undetected.

    • Weak Change Management Process: No formal change request approval or impact analysis leading to unplanned feature additions.
  7. Weak Configuration and Environment Management:

    • Inconsistent Environments: No containerization using tools like Docker, causing differences between development, testing, and production environments.
  8. Insufficient Risk Mitigation Frameworks:

    • No Risk Scoring: Absence of quantitative risk assessment techniques (e.g., Risk Probability and Impact Matrix).

(b) Technical Recommendations to Avoid Failures

  1. Implement Advanced Requirements Engineering Techniques:

    • Requirements Documentation and Validation:
      • Use tools like Enterprise Architect or IBM Rational DOORS to capture detailed requirements.
      • Create and maintain a Requirements Traceability Matrix (RTM) to track requirement fulfillment.
    • Requirements Modeling: Utilize:
      • UML diagrams (Use Case, Sequence, Activity) for functional modeling.
      • ERDs for database structure design.
      • Mockups or wireframes for visual representation of user interfaces.
    • Validation Mechanisms:
      • Perform formal inspections or peer reviews for requirement documents.
      • Implement Behavior-Driven Development (BDD) using tools like Cucumber.
  2. Adopt Structured SDLC Methodologies:

    • Choose the appropriate SDLC model based on project requirements:
      • Agile Scrum/Kanban: For dynamic and iterative requirements.
