Improve Adapter selection/loading process

Description

I would like it to be easier to choose which adapter to use.
Solutions might include a GUI where the user can choose which adapter to use or a hook that is easier to implement.

Use Case

A developer should be able to easily specify which adapter is being used, either through code or GUI. The current solution requires a filter be added before the plugin is loaded.
