Why do we hash the phone numbers?

As the actual numbers are completely irrelevant once the game is could we just substitute a users phone number with their unique ID from the DB?

Yes we do with the votes

we use phone number instead of uid because at the beginning we could vote without being registered. So since we do need to register now, we can use user id instead.
