Project Description:

In this work our team checks the order of a phase transition in a frustrated Ising model. We took an article, in which the authors obtained an order phase transition and proved that in fact there is a topological phase transition. In this problem, the Ising model is used, which is a two-dimensional lattice of spins in which all diagonal bonds are antiferromagnetic, and the closest ones are ferromagnetic.

The original idea of the work was to find the distance between the ground and excited energy states in a given lattice. To reproduce the results of the article, we used tensor networks, however, no phase transition was found. Then we repeated the article using the CPLEX method and saw that the transition actually exists. We assumed that since the tensor train method did not give us a result, then our system has topologically nontrivial phases, which means that it is worth looking for a topological phase transition. Since the state class obtained by tensor networks is smaller than the VQD state class, we used this algorithm to test the hypothesis. Unfortunately, we did not have enough computing power of our super-computer. Finally, the result was obtained using D-wave annealing: we observed this transition.
