OpenFlowKit Stability + Quality Update (2026-03-02)

[Vrun-design]

We shipped a major quality pass focused on reliability, security posture, maintainability, and production readiness.

This update was driven by codebase audit findings and is intended to make OpenFlowKit safer to run, easier to maintain, and more predictable to scale.

Why We Did This

Our audit showed strong product capability but meaningful engineering debt in a few high-risk areas:

• React correctness/lint violations
• Duplicated configuration and persistence behavior
• Low integration confidence for key user flows
• Large initial bundle risk
• Incomplete Design System implementation

This work closes those gaps so shipping velocity can continue without compounding hidden risk.

What We Fixed

1) Security + Config Hygiene

• Consolidated AI/provider configuration into shared, typed modules to avoid UI/runtime drift.
• Added provider connection diagnostics to make auth/base URL/CORS failures easier to identify.
• Added support for custom provider headers for gateway/proxy setups (for example Cloudflare Access).

Why:

• Eliminate config mismatch bugs that are hard to detect in review.
• Reduce accidental secret-handling mistakes in client builds.
• Reduce support/debug time for common CORS and connectivity issues in self-hosted/forked deployments.

2) Correctness + Lint Gate

• Resolved production React correctness violations (hooks ordering/usage, render-time ref access patterns, effect/state issues, JSX validity).
• Restored lint and CI discipline as hard quality gates.

Why:

• Reduce unstable render behavior and regression risk.
• Keep future changes safer by enforcing consistent guardrails.

3) Persistence + State Reliability

• Reduced conflicting persistence behavior and stabilized state-save flow.
• Added tests around state/persistence critical paths.

Why:

• Prevent state drift and “works locally, fails on restore” issues.
• Make autosave/restore behavior more deterministic and debuggable.

4) Docs + AI Assistant Grounding

• Fixed docs context loading patterns to ensure documentation content is actually available to docs/chat workflows.
• Added guards for empty docs context.

Why:

• Improve answer quality and trust in docs-based AI features.
• Avoid silent degradation where assistant runs without source context.

5) Bundle + Performance Hardening

• Introduced route/component lazy-loading for heavy areas.
• Split large bundles into safer chunks and removed single mega-chunk risk.
• Added dynamic loading for heavy optional runtime modules (like layout engine paths).
• Added CI entry-bundle budget checks (bundle:check) for startup assets.

Why:

• Improve initial load performance and prevent silent regressions.
• Protect user-facing performance with objective CI budgets.

6) Test Coverage Expansion (Minimal High-Value E2E)

• Added Playwright setup and smoke E2E flows for:
  • Create new flow + tab interaction
  • Snapshot restore + persistence verification
• Integrated these into local quality workflow.

Why:

• Cover real user paths beyond unit tests.
• Catch wiring regressions that lint/unit tests can miss.

7) Design System Feature Completion

• Completed previously unfinished Design System editor areas (nodes/edges tabs).
• Wired design-system tokens to runtime node/edge rendering behavior.
• Expanded editable token surface (colors, typography scale, node chrome, edge styling).

Why:

• Make the feature truly production-usable rather than partially scaffolded.
• Keep white-label/theming as a reliable product differentiator.

8) CI + Quality Pipeline Upgrades

• Tightened CI flow with explicit checks for:
  • lint
  • unit/integration tests
  • i18n consistency
  • production build + smoke verification
  • bundle budget compliance
  • guardrail tests for single-source config/state contracts

Why:

• Move from best-effort quality to enforceable quality.
• Stop regressions from re-entering during rapid feature development.

Impact Summary

• Higher production confidence
• Stronger safety around secrets and config drift
• Better runtime correctness and fewer fragile React paths
• Improved startup bundle control
• Better confidence in core user flows through E2E smoke coverage
• Fully usable Design System workflow

Notes

• Some large lazy chunks still exist by design for advanced features; these are intentionally deferred and no longer part of the initial entry payload.
• Next phase after release: structured folder/domain cleanup in phased move-only PRs to further improve long-term maintainability.
