I was being prompted to calibrate on every power-up or reset. Returning explicit boolean values
from these methods fixed it for me.

Interesting observation; the proposed fix seems logical. Did you test with ESP8266 Arduino Core 2.4.2 or 2.5.0?

It was 2.5.0, which I hadn't noticed until you asked. I had planned to use 2.4.2 to avoid betas, but I must have selected the wrong version.
It was also before I noticed this advice (#97) and switched to 160 mHz.

fyi, I changed to 2.4.2 and didn't have the same problem, so I guess these are just code hygiene
