Checklist

  • I am able to reproduce the bug with the latest version given here: CLICK THIS LINK.
  • I made sure that there are no existing issues - open or closed - which I could contribute my information to.
  • I have read the FAQ and my problem isn't listed.
  • I have taken the time to fill in all the required details. I understand that the bug report will be dismissed otherwise.
  • This issue contains only one bug.
  • I have read and understood the contribution guidelines.

Affected version

0.27.2

Steps to reproduce the bug

Happens via various methods of launching the video:

  • Clicking a YouTube link on Reddit/Signal etc and being taken to the NewPipe app where the video plays
  • Opening NewPipe, searching for a video, tapping it then play
  • Tapping on one of the videos present on the homepage

Expected behavior

I don't expect videos to be skipping/jumping during playback

Actual behavior

During playback, the video will jump and skip with high frequency, up to a full second. Even when trying to play the video at x0.5 playback speed, the video will jump past the skipped frames.

Example. This video...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pT40U75RKi4

...plays like this on my Google Pixel 6a (video reencoded via handbreak to fit within Github's attachment size limits):
https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/ad73a518-d1c8-4d62-9a25-e1d4c6ea7e8d

Clearing NewPipe cache + data, uninstalling + reinstalling does not fix the issue.

DOES NOT HAPPEN WITH ALL VIDEOS though due to the prevalence of jump-cuts in YouTube videos sometimes it's just hard to tell. Mostly noticable when following guides as opposed to general conversation. However if I notice it happening on one video, no amount of clearing cache, reinstallation or phone restarts will make it stop on that video.

Affected Android/Custom ROM version

Android 14 + Android 15

Affected device model

Google Pixel 6a

Additional information

  • Happens on WiFi or 4G/5G
  • Downloading the video and using another player (such as MX Player Pro) is how I work around this issue, as the video downloads just fine.
  • I have set NewPipe as the default application to open YouTube links

Creators some time speed up the video during editing to save time and same jumping occurs when you watch video in the browser, it is nothing to do with NewPipe.

Can you please review the link I posted and the footage I provided rather than quickly brushing off what I mentioned as "simply jumpcuts"? That is not what I'm reporting here.

Play the video with sound through your browser, then watch my phone screen's recording with sound, and it will be obvious that something's not right. If you really can't spot it, play the two videos next to each other on your screen, and watch how the Android recording speeds ahead as it jumps forward compared to the web link.

Edit: Typos

Your attachment link is broken for me.

Anyway, it looks like you have skip silence enabled in player settings. Could you check?

Oh.. that could be reason that's why I couldn not reproduce it on my phone when comparing uploaded video & in browser behavior because video was fast forwarded on that same timestamp by uploader.

anyway @TreeBranches you can take help from my this comment to check whether skip silence is ON.

Thanks for this! Yes, skip silence was on for some reason. This fixed the issue for me!
