A research station belonged to the Minecraft account, not to a character. Focus is kept per character, so a player could start a project, switch to another character, open the same lectern and spend that character's focus on it, then repeat with every character on the account. Several characters could pool their focus into one project.

A station now records the character who started its project, and the file under plugins/Research/data/stations/ keeps it as owner_character_id. Another character on the same account gets the usual "in use" message when it clicks the lectern, and a menu that was already open stops responding after a switch, so no focus is spent and no experiment is run. Stations saved before this change have no character recorded; the next character to open one becomes its owner. No configuration or message changes are needed.

Unit tests cover a second character being refused at the lectern and through an open menu, the starting character carrying on as before, older stations being claimed on first open, the character being recorded at start, and the new field surviving a save and load. mvn clean verify passes with Java 21.

Stations were owned by the account, so any character on it could open a
project and spend its own focus there. A station now records the
starting character, and other characters get the "in use" message and
cannot act through an already open menu. Stations saved before this
belong to the next character to open them.

Part of TF-Minecraft/RPCharacters#89.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Research stations are now linked to the character that created them. Access and project actions require the matching active character.
    • Existing stations without a recorded character owner are assigned to the first character that opens them. That ownership is saved for future visits.

Walkthrough

Stations now store an optional owner character ID. Station access checks both the owning player UUID and the active character ID. New stations record the creator’s active character ID, and eligible openings can assign and save a character ID for an unassigned station.

Station character ownership

Layer / File(s) Summary
Persist station owner character IDs

Stations and saved data now include an optional owner character ID. Storage saves and restores the ID. Persistence tests cover missing IDs and round-trip saving.
Retrieve active character IDs
src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/research/manager/PlayerManager.java, src/test/java/net/tfminecraft/research/util/ResearchItemsTest.java
PlayerManager.getActiveCharacterId(Player) returns the active character’s ID or null. Tests cover both cases.
Check character ownership during station access
src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/research/manager/ResearchManager.java, src/test/java/net/tfminecraft/research/manager/ResearchManagerTest.java
Station access and menu resolution check character ownership. New stations record the creator’s active character ID. Eligible openings assign and save an ID for an unassigned station. Tests cover access, project use, claiming, and new station ownership.

A project started without an active character may later be claimed by a different character. Guard that start path before merging, or accept the bounded risk.

Require an active character before starting a project.

The lectern path checks only the station permission before calling startProject. If no active character exists, startProject saves the station without an ownerCharacterId. A later character can then claim it. Reject the start before consuming the item or saving the station when no active character exists. Keep the existing claim behaviour for legacy stations without an owner.
