It came up in conversation on #325 that deserialization should check machine master version to make sure that it's new enough to run the deserialized version.
Nothing actually prevents a too-old machine from serializing itself if it recognizes all of the pieces (though we should prevent that since there are possibly pieces it's not looking for, or enforcing.)
