Problem Description

When I turn on the computer I’m getting an error at the top of the screen when the MSI logo appears, saying in yellow the following:
error: 'not found' while opening the root directory of the volume

After that, the rEFInd plus boot menu shows up and I can load Windows 11 or macOS Sequoia through the OpenCore menu without problems. Windows 11 also loads without any issues from the OpenCore menu.

I’m wondering what type of error is this one and if I should be worried and try to fix it (and how to fix it). Have you seen it before? Is it triggered by rEFInd or by the UEFI BIOS? The motherboard is a MSI Z590-A Pro. The PC is dual booting Windows 11 24H2 and macOS Sequoia and rEFInd plus is used to chainload with OpenCore and Clover.

The error is from RefindPlus and is generated because, for reasons unknown, it couldn't access the ESP to store its debug log.

An update to ISSUE 204 due in a few days will result it it looking for another ESP in such cases.

Will look into whether additional more descriptive messages can be added as the log file will not be in the expected ESP if another is found.

Run the REL file designed for Day to Day use instead of DBG file to avoid the message.
No idea why that ESP is not available. Either some security restrictions or a non-standard filesystem perhaps.

Thanks for the feedback. I updated the rEFInd efi driver very recently, so what you say makes sense as the error started appearing after I made the update. I think I used the REL version but will switch to that one if I used the DBG version

Also note that if you have been running the DBG file for a long time, the ESP might have become clogged with log files.

I didn't see this error message before. Also, I dont see the available space in the ESP shrinking. I'll check now.

I'm using the REL version. I checked if the ESP was clogged but I didn't see anything pointing to that. Nevertheless, I reverted to the previous rEFInd version I had to see if the error message goes away. The error is still there so I suspect something else happened affecting the Windows 11 drive ESP (I'm assuming it's the Windows ESP the one having a problem).

Are you running RefindPlus? Not sure as you refer to rEFInd in all your posts.

Took a closer look and the message might indeed appear with REL files and might be caused by another volume that is not the ESP.

Will update things to also try to output the name of the affected volume.
