xfce-panel crashes #7721
Comments
FWIW, I have experienced this once so far on 4.1 when rapidly double-clicking the "expand menu arrow" of a "launcher" icon, but I wasn't able to reproduce it by repeating that action. |
Just experienced a panel crash again while clicking the clock to open/close the calendar. journalctl -r output
~/.xsession-errors
|
A forum user also reported the panel disappearing, but I'm not sure if it's the same bug: |
Happened again this morning. journalctl
|
This had not happened since September 10th (the post above) journalctl
The major issue is that it doesn't automatically restart. I don't think non-technical users will know how to recover from this except force-powering off the system -- the log out icon is not even available. |
I have personally been observing more frequent xfce4-panel crashes lately. |
Good point. Increased priority and pinning to make this issue easier to find. |
I think upgrading XFCE version to latest stable can solve many problems, this one can be one of them. Current xfce version in qubes is 4.14 (didnt even use 4.16) and latest release is 4.18: |
Xfce 4.16 will be part of R4.2. 4.18 was released a bit too late to make it into R4.2, unfortunately. Xfce 4.16 can be used in R4.1 in sys-gui / sys-gui-gpu based on sufficiently new template, but since that's an experimental feature, it isn't for everyday use. |
New thread with some more user tips: https://forum.qubes-os.org/t/better-way-to-restart-tool-bar-when-it-crash/16334/ |
Dropping in to mention that we have a SecureDrop Workstation user reporting this issue now reliably occurs every time they use their machine (4.1). It doesn't sound like there's more diagnostic information needed, but if there is, I am happy to relay the request. |
Qubes OS release
R4.1
Brief summary
After some use, the
xfce4-panel
crashed. This is the second time in two weeks that this happens. Basically the top bar disappears.Steps to reproduce
I don't know how to reproduce it.
Expected behavior
The panel would not randomly crash
Actual behavior
journalctl
`~/.xsession-errors` (error at the bottom seems related)
