MacOS Ricing Script

Motivation

Are you tired of the plain old GNOME look?

Ricing your desktop can take hours and maybe even days, so how about I simplify that process into one single command, instantly transforming your dull desktop settings into a sleek, productivity-suite that MacOS Tahoe 26 is without ever actually owning a MacBook!

This script doesn't expect you to have any applications installed, in fact it can be installed on any fresh debian / arch / RHEL - based systems as long as it has git.

Currently, MacOS Sequoia rice is also supported, just switch the branch of this repository from main to "sequoia"

Before

Old Ubuntu Desktop
Standard GNOME - Functional, but personality-less and eughh

After

New macOS Style Desktop
This is so MUCH BETTER

Features

  • Full macOS Theming (Shell, GTK, Icons, Cursors, Wallpaper)
  • Spotlight Search (via Ulauncher with custom theme, this is a bit-broken for the time-being)
  • Window Effects (Magic Lamp minimization, Compiz windows)
  • Smart Dock (configured Dash-to-Dock)
  • Blur Effects (optional high-performance mode, needs to be triggered while installing)

All this with one script btw!

Pre-Requisites

This script is designed strictly for:

  • GNOME Desktop Environment (Versions 42+)

Warning

This script will overwrite your existing GNOME settings (extensions, themes, and keybindings).

Setup

Important

Backup Recommended: Please ensure you have a backup in case the installation results are not to your taste or something goes woefully wrong. I highly recommend creating a snapshot using TimeShift before proceeding.

So Clone this repository:

git clone https://github.com/PranavU-Coder/macos_rice.git
cd macos_rice

proceed to run the installer-script:

chmod +x install.sh
./install.sh

Optional

If you have a dedicated GPU or modern hardware, you can enable advanced blur effects (Blur My Shell). This looks better but uses more RAM which might be undesirable for older hardware.

./install.sh --full

Post-Installation

Once the script finishes, log out and log back in (or reboot) to see all changes applied correctly.

You can further customize the look using the GNOME Extensions or GNOME Tweaks.

Issues

In case the installation didn't go the intended way or something crashed, please create an issue to let the developer know so suitable fixes can be patched to make this reliable.
