Images in Adobe Illustrator format

There are a lot of images in a proprietary format. Can't we, at least, have an open version of each image? (In case there is a strong quality reason for not using something like SVG directly).

Can you clarify which images you are referring to? If SVG is available then we do have it in an open format. If it helps those can easily be converted to png and jpg in various sizes (Inkscape or Imagemagick).
