Hmm, in some cases the carriage return \r also overwrites the line in log file, sometimes not and the single animation prints take one line each.
I'm currently not sure what this depends on. tee vs direct forwarding to log file could be tested. Send to log from systemd units should be no issue since animation is only done on interactive shells.
During whole first run setup we need it interactive and generally want the animation to show up. Not sure if it's possible to assure those are not logged or overwritten. Perhaps it's easiest to remove the related lines afterwards via sed '/^\[[[:blank:]\.]*\]/d' logfile?
