SeamAware detects and exploits orientation discontinuities (seams) in time series data—structural features that standard methods treat as noise. By recognizing that certain signals naturally inhabit non-orientable quotient spaces (normalized signals on Sⁿ⁻¹/ℤ₂ ≅ ℝPⁿ⁻¹), we achieve:
- 10-63% MDL reduction over standard baselines (equivalent to 1.1×–2.7× compression ratio improvement)
- MDL-justified compression gains via seam-gated transformations
- Robust regime-switching detection without hidden states
- Emergence of k ≈ 0.721* as universal information-theoretic threshold
The visual proof: Standard Fourier analysis struggles with sign flips (panel B, red curve), treating them as noise that spikes residuals (panel D, red). SeamAware detects the orientation discontinuity and applies a flip atom (panel C, green), achieving near-perfect fit with 16-63% fewer bits. At the seam location τ, we apply a flip atom—a transformation that exploits latent symmetry. Primary atoms are true ℤ₂ involutions: sign inversion (x → −x) and time reversal (t → −t). Auxiliary atoms like variance scaling and polynomial detrending are preprocessing steps that expose hidden orientation structure.
This constant (k = 1/(2·ln 2) ≈ 0.721) emerges from MDL theory under Gaussian assumptions—see docs/theory.md for the derivation.*
Why non-orientable modeling saves bits: Standard methods treat signals as living on the orientable circle S¹ where points u and -u are distinct (panel A, red). This forces them to encode the full discontinuity when a sign flip occurs (~200 bits in residuals). SeamAware recognizes that normalized signals naturally live in projective space ℝP¹ where antipodal points are identified (u ~ -u) — like a Möbius strip (panel B, green). In this geometry, a sign flip is topologically trivial and costs just 1 bit for orientation. Standard methods ignore this inherent symmetry and pay ~140 extra bits per seam!

The "1 bit per seam" mentioned elsewhere refers to the orientation cost only (the final + m term). The full seam cost includes location encoding and totals ~9-11 bits per seam for typical signal lengths T = 200-1000.
Quantitative breakdown: The compression gain comes from dramatically lower data encoding cost (gray bars), not parameter tricks. Standard Fourier uses the same 320 bits for parameters as SeamAware. The 32-bit seam encoding cost (orange) is negligible compared to the ~140 bit savings from better residual fit. This is pure information-theoretic gain—SeamAware captures the signal's true geometry.
Why experimental k ≈ 0.782 vs theoretical 0.721?* Finite-sample effects, detection uncertainty, and model selection overhead raise the practical threshold by ~8%. See docs/theory.md § Reconciling k* for details.

1. Hidden Orientation Seam in a Signal

Monte Carlo simulation (50 trials per SNR) confirming the theoretical phase boundary. Below k*, the cost of encoding seams outweighs benefits. Above k*, SeamAware achieves 10-170% MDL improvement.
