I'm probably missing something obvious, but I've encountered a related issue with getting umlauts into affiliations/author names because I haven't figured out how to escape the double quote character in authors.csv such that the symbol appears correctly in authors.tex.

There have been hacks on and off in mkauthlist at various stages, though they are largely removed because it is much easier to have the generator of the csv deal with it properly. If you are having problems, this is probably an issue to post on the mkauthlist repo.
