Hi everyone, we've reached the next big number!
Alpaca 4 is ready to be released, I'm just doing some testing, I'm sure bugs will appear, I'm trying my best to bring you guys a great update!
CONFIRMED RELEASE DATE: Feb 01 2025 ✨✨
Edit (Jan 31): I'm going out tomorrow so instead of delaying the release I'll just push it today!!!
New Stuff
New Model Manager
The big one, the model manager has been rewritten from the ground up. It now handles downloads, model creation and profile pictures more effectively with a nicer interface that showcases all the available models in a much better way.
For more information about it's development checkout this discussion: #475
Changed the spinner
So I just found out that I shouldn't use GtkSpinner when creating an Adwaita app... Oops.
So yeah, Alpaca now uses AdwSpinner, it scales better, it's less laggy and looks better.

Better Handling of File Types
When attaching a file you can now select any plain text file, ODT and PDF as well as images when supported.
If you press the attachment button it checks if the selected model can process images, if not it doesn't let you attach images, it took 4 major versions to do that, crazy right? hahaha.
Changed the Model Manager Selector Thingy
It now has a new design, the model manager button is now at the left and not inside the dropdow, if you are an old user you might remember this being the original design in the first versions of Alpaca, it is now more refined and looks as if it was one big button instead of two separate widgets.
Better Chat Title Generation
I changed the prompt to generate chat titles, it can now include emojis!
The model decides if your chat is worth getting an emoji tho.
And also the default model is now the one that generates titles, not the selected one.
Closing Warning Dialog Thing
If you close Alpaca whilst a model is being downloaded you will get this nice reminder.
Chain-of-thought model thoughts
Now when the message is rendered all the text inside
<think>
tags are bundled into attachments, technically speaking this is the first time a model has been able to make an attachment even though it really isn't considered one inside the SQL, whatever it's neat I think.Better Launch Process
You know when you launch Alpaca and you get some messed up messages and the app freezes for a couple of seconds? well instead of fixing that I made this nice loading screen :D
Nah for real, the launch process is much faster now and this screen is only there to make sure the user doesn't touch anything whilst it is loading. Really fast, really nice.
Deepseek R1
Yeah I'm also hyped about this, if you don't know this model please watch this quick video.
I'm pleased to announce Deepseek R1 works perfectly fine in Alpaca! (I just tested the small versions)
It is really nice and surprisingly good, open source models like these are what makes tools like Alpaca shine, of course I didn't do anything too special, Ollama is just a really nice platform.
Other Stuff
As always thanks for reading and using my app, please keep supporting me and Alpaca!, this project has a lot more potential as the local AI thing for Linux than I thought at first, I'm back at college so I might not release a feature update for a couple of months but I will keep patching and improving Alpaca!
Again, thanks for the support!
