2. Save with Ctrl+S very fast after the last time
3. JabRef prompts that the file has changed externally, and asks to review changes.
4. Becomes very slow afterwards.

Thank you for reporting this issue. We think, that is already fixed in our development version and consequently the change will be included in the next release.

We would like to ask you to use a development build from https://builds.jabref.org/master and report back if it works for you. Please remember to make a backup of your library before trying-out this version.

While it still prompts that the file has changed externally, it no longer becomes slow. So indeed the issue is solved! Thanks!

Everytime you hit save, a copy is written to another file and then the original file is replaced. So if you hit repeatedly save very fast this could result in your phenomenon and might be a bit dependent on the OS and on the size of your library.

You could also enable autosave, so you don't have to worry about saving manually after changes
