According to https://www.drupal.org/project/drupal/issues/2998713, remote audio is not yet in core but is slated for Drupal 9.1. In the meantime, there doesn't seem to be a contrib solution for embedding audio files hosted outside of Drupal. Anyone have any additional info?

I saw a site recently that was able to add remotely stored images to an Image media because a File entity takes a URI which doesn't have to start with "public://" or "fedora://". I was actually quite surprised that it worked.
So, technically you could do remote audio now, you just have to create it via a Migration (or possibly via REST) instead of the UI for the time-being. Of course, I don't think this is documented anywhere.
@seth-shaw-unlv thanks. I don't think remote audio is a pressing need for us at the moment, video more likely is. We might be able to wait for it in core, but there it'll probably be for Spotify, etc. and not generic.
