Various feedback on use of plugins in Module 3:

  • In Module 3 Exercise 1, we spent a lot of time walking people through installing and using the OSM Place Search plugin. I’m not sure that’s necessary for the exercise, suggest removing it.

    • For the exercise, it could be quicker and just as useful to give people coordinates to enter into the coordinates search to find the right location.
  • An exercise introduced 2 plugins at the same time which is too many (again for beginners). I should have skipped the OSM place search in the beginning

  • Module 3 Exercise 2 – similar to above, seems unnecessary to install a plugin to get a basemap when OSM is available in XYZ tiles by default

I think it does make sense to introduce OSM place search. Getting the coordinates and searching for the right location seems more complicated to me. I added an explanation about plugins in the getting started with QGIS chapter and will add a note in the Trainer's section of the exercise that a plugin will be installed. Plugins are integral to QGIS and trainees should learn how to install them at some point.
