Figure 10 - main function (bin1)

The first part is the prologue. Then we have a line mov rax, fs:28h, which is used for safety purposes. That is why at the end we have a part after nop instruction. This is a canary for buffer overflow. If the value of the canary was changed during execution it will call the stack_chk_fail. This feature is implemented by the compiler.

Then time function is called with argument 0x00 (NULL). The returned value (rax) is saved in rdi - arg for localtime. Then the function internally stores part of the returned value in registers esi, r8d, edi, ecx, edx, eax (call-clobbered). Because the printf contains 6 args it used stack for storing the variable (string for format). Then it calls the printf function. Then there is a check for buffer overflow and epilogue.

Here we have two library functions - time and localtime.
But there are some errors in the code:

There is an error in hours, instead, it returns the number of days since Sunday(0-6).

The month started with 0, so we need +1 for the value.

If we need to save these errors in the code, it will look like this as shown in Figure 11.

Figure 11 - Bin1 with errors

Figure 35 - Hello world

I install the extension to compile the program for Windows using the command
sudo apt-get install mingw-w64
. to be able to analyze the Pe file I install pev -
sudo apt install pev
.

The first structure of the PE file is DOS Header. It has a size of 64 bytes and it has the following structure as shown in Figure 36.

Figure 36 - DOS header

Then there is a DOS stub - an error message saying “This program cannot be run in DOS mode”. it prints when the program is run in DOS mode.

Then, NT Headers. It contains three main parts:
PE signature - A 4-byte signature that identifies the file as a PE file.
File Header - holds some information about the PE file (Figure 37).
Optional Header - The most important header of the NT Headers, its name is the Optional Header because some files like object files don’t have it, however, it’s required for image files (files like .exe files). This header provides important information to the OS loader (Figure 38).

Figure 39 - ELF Header

The section table follows the Optional Header, it is an array of Image Section Headers, there’s a section header for every section in the PE file. Each header contains information about the section (Figure 40).

Figure 41 - Section table (ELF)

Sections are where the contents of the file are stored (data, resources, code of the program).

PE format has only sections, the ELF executable has both sections and segments. ELF segment is more like a section in PE.
