for resources I've found trying to get a better understand of how open-source "works".

Making and remaking code requires high-level synthesis—
which, as it turns out, is hard to break into little pieces.

Roughly, it takes 2x more time to write a patch if you are unfamiliar with the project,
but it takes 10x more time to figure out where you should change the code.
