Try to force the groups to write tests by forcing the bots through a series of particular situations/challenges prone to introduce bugs (does a bot crash when teleported from his homezone to enemy zone, does a bot crash when completely surrounded by enemies, ...). This could be a fun addition to the tournament.
I’m not really sure if this makes sense in the most extreme ways: Ie. teleporting the bots to strange places, as this plays against all implicit assumptions that are in the game.
OTOH, I am sympathetic to the idea of providing a set of ‘chess composition’ examples at some point in the programming project. Of course, part of the tournament is that they invent their own chess compositions and test against them but perhaps we have some nice ideas for that as well.
