Does not recognise multiple assignations when the middle has a cast

I have experimented with multiple variations of it when this first occured.
While this raises the expected error:

void func(void **arr, char *str)
{
    str = ((char **)arr)[1] = str;
}

this does not:

    str = (((char **)arr)[1] = str);
